There
is no word in the Inuit language for art or beauty. The nearest is ‘sananguaq’ meaning
likeness or imitation. So how can there be artists? In historical times, the
Inuit would carve charms and masks, decorating them as part of their religious
beliefs so that they could communicate with the spirit world both good and evil.
Because both men and women were good at making tools and clothes, carving art
objects and crafts was a natural thing for them. When they met outsiders they
would trade these objects for mirrors, knives an beads.
